4th of July

Happy Independence Day!

Hey everybody, today is the 4th of July, one of the most celebrated holidays in America, and rightly so.

July 2nd, 1776, the United States declared their independance from England, when the Continental Congress approved a resolution of independence. On the next day, John Adams wrote to his wife, telling her -

"The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more"

He was off, by a mere two days, not bad guess work there. Because the very well publiscized Decleration of Independence showed the date 4th of July, that became the celebrated date, right from the get-go.

Something else of note, is that most historians believe that many, if not most, of the signers actually signed the Decleration on August 2nd 1776.

So there you go, a short history lesson, now you can sound smart in front of your friends at the parties later today, just make sure you don't mix up the facts.

Happy Independence Day, I hope all of you feel the pride swell in your chest as you see the flag flying, hear the national anthem, and think of all the men and women who have died to keep us free.

This aint the national anthem, but it's a good patriotic song.
